Enhancements

Known Issues: https://github.com/arnoldthebat/chromiumos/issues

The Update Server will be made available in the next week or so.

In addition to the Special Builds, there are now enhanced Vanilla builds. These allow Google Drive integration and certain enhanced media codecs. This should allow the users with working daily builds more functionality and usability.

These Vanilla builds will also update automatically as and when I get the Update Server ready.

Please do not log issues with the Vanilla build since they are a courtesy build and will only work on devices with Freon supported graphics and CMT supported touch pads. WiFi and Ethernet will also have reduced support.

      1. I tried R54 special build x64 and x86 and the vanilla builds aswell. All of them showed a black screen. R52 special build x64 booted, touchscreen worked but wifi was not available. I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro (3845).

  1. I still can’t get past the black screen after the logo (console is accessible) on my A6-6310 with a R4 AMD Radeon. Is it a driver issue ? The only Chromium working on my laptop so far is the CloudReady build which is still based on R50. Any idea how to make it work ?

  2. It seems that many people with AMD/Radeon cards can’t boot up the Arnold the Bat versions of Chromium. I have an old Sony Vaio laptop with AMD graphics card (I think it’s a 5700 card). I’m running Cloud Ready 64 bit 51.1 and it’s perfect – super fast with my Evo 840 SSD and 8gb ram. However with Arnold the Bat, I haven’t been able to get any of the Special Builds to get past the Chromium logo since I first tried this 3 months ago.

Can’t the Neverware/CloudReady builds be analysed to work out what’s missing?

I would much rather use these builds as they are more up to date.

    Thanks!

      1. How could I do that ? Do I just need to boot on the key, wait for the blackscreen and take the file from the key one another computer ?

          1. I have an AMD Radeon as well, and had the same black screen that others are talking about. Attempted to use x64 Special build. USB boots to black screen, but got to terminal via ctrl-alt-f2 and decided to try and install anyway. Still couldn’t figure out the black screen issue. A mouse cursor was visible, and I could shut down if I clicked the right place on the screen. I would get the Chromium splash screen, then nothing but a mouse cursor on black screen. Tried CloudReady and display is fine with that build.

    1. Same problem here installing on HP Pavilion notebook with NVidia card.
CloudReadby build works fine, I agreed this seems to be a problem of missing video drivers

  3. Hello,

    I used Win32DiskImager to put Camd64OS_R54-8659.0-Special.7z on a 16GB stick

It starts up ok but i get a warning

“Device is low on disk space”

Storage managment within ChromiumOS shows Capacity to be 1.1GB

In Windows, the DiskPart utility shows that 11GB is free on the stick

    1. I also am seeing this issue with the latest special build from August. I’m using a 32 GB USB flash stick (3.0, Samsung) on a Toshiba Portege Z930. With the new build, it calls out the same 1.1 GB limit that Graham is seeing. In fact, I can’t use the Google Docs Offline app as I don’t have enough space.

This problem did not exist with the special build from May.

I don’t mean to whine/complain; these builds are awesome and have been great to use on my system.

      Thank you Arnold!

      1. Same problem here, can’t wait for next version ! 🙂
Very good work though. Been trying to install Chromium in a while untill I found your site !

  4. Hey Arnold, I’m having a weird problem here. Trying R54 (special) out on a 2014 13″ rMBP and the battery indicator’s nowhere to be found. Pretty sure it was working in R4x (also special).

    On battery, running power_supply_info returns:

[0810/234151:WARNING:power_supply.cc(596)] Found neither line power nor a battery; assuming that line power is connected
    Device: Line Power
    path:
    online: yes

    current (A): 0
    max voltage (V): 0
    max current (A): 0
    active source:
    available sources:
    supports dual-role: no

    Appreciate your work though.

    1. Same thing I’ve noticed with all Chromium builds on my MBP. It’s probably the hardware. How is chromium built by the way, I wanted to try build one or two, but the website has no info about the features, drivers and everything you and hexxeh added.

        1. After hours o research, i think the problem is ectool, it’s missing, so the battery state info cannot be read. I haven’t had time to find this out on the ChromeOs image I don’t know if there are libs also linked to ectool, but I think the whole embedded controller library is missing. Please check on that and reply Arnold. And great job.
          Matt

  5. Hardware: exopc, 2011 stock vintage but 2GB RAM. Booted up live USB as well as installed on external SDcard by changing chromeos-install [commenting check_removable()].

Everything seems to work. BUT: On screen touch works, however on-screen keyboard display showed up but CANNOT input anything that requires typing. Any suggestions?

  6. Addendum to my previous posting:
    Hardware: exoPC.

Managed to get the touch/soft keyboard to input, but only as NON-guest user.

Touch/soft keyboard still does not activate/showed itself when pressed on login screen when first started up where Chrome OS asked for Google account account to login as. This is different as reported earlier, where the touch/soft key showed, but does not input (as guest). This time touch/soft key never popped up.

  7. I have been wanting to install this on my Samsung laptop. But the wireless driver is just not supported.

It is: Realtek RTL8192E Wireless LAN 802.11n

Is there any work arounds to get it to work. And if so a step by step on how to do it. I have tried the latest special build. But still no joy.

      1. Has this been incorporated yet? I’ve tried both vanilla and special builds and neither seem to detect the RTL8192E wifi during installation.

  8. Asus laptops have a common wifi problem and it can be fixed by add a file named ‘asus_nb_wmi.conf’ and content is ‘options asus_nb_wmi wapf=4’ in /etc/modprobe.d. Can you fix it?

        1. I just tried the newest version and its can be fixed by add rt2860.bin (copy from my Ubuntu 16.04 lts) to /lib/firmware. Do not need the solution above.

  9. I have an XPS 13 (9343).

In the new build without X input, tapping doesn’t work for 1, 2, and 3 fingers despite being set to on. However, all of the 2 and 3 finger gestures work.
The touchscreen doesn’t work (but I never use it).
    The headphones port doesn’t work.

In the old build with X input, all three types of tapping and two finger scrolling works when enabled using synclient. None of the other gestures work.
    The touchscreen worked.
The headphones port didn’t work then either.
Updating didn’t work. It gave an error about the EFI services not shutting off after rebooting. This computer also supports the Legacy BIOS but installing the special build used the GPT format and it was unbootable.

You might want to add a link to the security issues caused by developer mode since it seems to be on by default.

Thank you for your amazing work.

    1. Hi

Dev mode is on by default. I would sort of expect anyone using it to change the chronos user password once they have deployed the image. In the future, Ill be providing dev and none dev images to allow the hardened builds to be used. I need to fix more stuff 1st.

  10. Dell Vostro 3500, Special build.

Over all very good – so far only the following issues found with this build…

Mouse doesn’t work on resume from sleep

Issues with opening some PDF documents – old (created years ago) seem to open fine, newer ones (one even created today from Google Drawing) open to a black screen. PDF controls shown, but no document content.

    Thanks for your great efforts.

  11. wifi – no network – wifi is turned off

    I tested Camd64OS_R54-8659.0-Vanilla – on a usb stick before
committing to deleting windows on my Acer Aspire Switch 11 SW5 11.6-Inch Convertible Notebook PC, Intel Atom Z3745 1.33 GHz, 2 GB RAM
Wifi: Realtek RTL8723BS Wireless LAN 802.11n SDIO Network Adapter.

I wondered if you could help, should i try on of the “normal” builds? This is my first dip into anything Linux based. I was going to try Ubuntu but every forum had numerous hardware incompatibilities that i don’t have the technical knowledge to correct. thanks in advance.

    1. Also tried; Camd64OS-20160823010101.img – wifi – no network – taskbar -type thing (bottom right) disapears.

Cx86OS_R54-8659.0-Special – no network – taskbar -type thing (bottom right) disapears. no touchscreen but worked on the other two?

Sorry for duplicate posts they weren’t showing up hours afterwards

  12. Tested new builds on my HP Pavilion notebook:

    – Special build R54 gets stuck on “booting kernel” message
    – Enhanced Vanilla R54 gets stuck on ChromeOS logo during first boot

    🙁

  13. Hello,

Thank you kindly for your releases , im trying install the lastest Vanilla build on my lenovo 100s (80R9) (originally was windows) however WiFi driver is not working properly – card is Intel AC3160 Dual band , inside your build i see module and drive that should appear to be working however module that loading is iwl3160-13 and on kernel site(https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi) actual version for kernel 4.3+ is 3160-16 … Im confused how to make it load correctly…

    1. After research found that this issue exist on debian after upgrade to kernel 4.4.x – on forums suggesting to go back to previous kernel version=meaning lack of lastest updates in your builds…
In any case tried upload “new iwlwifi-3160-16.ucode” into /lib/firmware – rebooted without and changes 🙁 I have ethernet usb adapter for my laptop – but dying to use it with wifi….

      1. If Wifi Disabled:

Solved issue for Intel Dual Band WiFi AC3160:
        1. Download lasted file(according to build version) from :
        https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi
        2. Make installation to your HDD – and login with root .
        3. type dmesg -and using “shift” + “pgup”/”pgdwn” look for messages that describes what module for wifi failed to load with error “-2” — ex: “direct firmware load for iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode failed with error -2”

Using this information rename downloaded file to name that was tried to be loaded.
        4. Find option to copy file to your laptop (USB/microsd/ethernet + FTP/HTTP wget) .
        5. while you in “root” type -” mount -o remount, rw / ”
        6. cd /lib/firmware
        7. backup all file related to your “wifi” adapter with tar/other folder.
        8. and put your new file here .
        9. reboot laptop – wifi should work.

  14. HP Probook 4720s – special build works perfect, but dmesg:
    cros_ec_lpcs: unsupported system.
intel_rapl: driver does not support CPU family 6 model 37
Any ideas? I think that need update microcode?

  15. Hi, I’m having issues with R54 special release: no wifi on a no-name laptop based on Atom Z3735F and RTL9723BS(sdio). I see the firmware in /lib/firmware so assume kernel has driver support. Wifi doesn’t show up in dmesg, ifconfig -a or anywhere else so I’m guessing that the issue is SDIO support.

If this is related to issue#78 in your repo, is this something that will come from the overall Chromium project or something that you may handle adding in the future?

  16. Thanks for releasing this, just tried Chrome OS for the first time today and it did give a second breath of life to my laptop. Keep up the good job!

  17. I’ll try again, should support for RTL8723 sdio wifi be included in this release? I see the appropriate firmware in /lib/firmware but no device is found (i.e. in demsg, etc).

    Thanks

  18. First time trying Chromium, and very happy to have found this place.
Tried the latest special build CAM64OS_R54 and it worked pretty good on a Dell Latitude E5520.
Not quiet the same with a year newer model E5530 non-pro. I keep getting “Invalid partition table” when booting from USB. A hit on Enter and it loads. Now it’s installed and I have to hit Enter on every boot. Clearly not the biggest issue, i’m just wondering if there is anything I can do about it.
    Great work BTW.

  19. Hi Arnold First of all great work on your builds. I had try many of your builds in my EF10MI2 wich have a RTL8723BE for WIFI but with any of your builds can make it work, i try the specials, dailys and weeklys without success. In the near future you add this driver to your builds?

  20. Anybody else finding certificate transparency, or lack of it on many sites, to be very annoying? Does Google plan on moving forward enforcing the requirement? Besides that, I’m pretty happy with this build.

    1. I was forced to downgrade – the net simply is not ready for certificate transparency. Perhaps there is a way to turn the requirement off in the source code?

  21. I am new to Chromium and don’t know much about linux. I have a tired Dell Inspiron 9400 and would like to give Chromium a try on it. Chromium boots from the USB but can’t get the Wifi to work. Tried a hard connection with no luck as well. I have seen posts on this site describing fixes but I am not sure what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  22. I’m sorry that this a little off top.

First, Thank you so much for putting your precious time out to develop Chromium OS for the public. I’ve used many different Chromium OS but none of them has a way to create Local User nor Supervised User. I tried to build 1 myself but I just don’t have enough knowledge to do so. I notice that there is a sh that can use to create a local account called “enable_localaccount.sh” but I don’t know how to access the “~/trunk/src/scripts” to get to the command. Is there any other possible way to have some kind of local account or get the supervised user to work?

      1. I had a look but from what i can tell the files required are missing, but apart from that your build works great

  23. Help…
Trying to use arnolds distros on a 64 bit dell inspiron M5110
tried latest vanilla and special 64 bit and 32 bit distros and they all boot to the ” finding the kernel ” message then show the splash screen then black screen !!! using windows 10 laptop to create USB ( 64 GIG sandisk ) easyfit
    can you help please help.
i can run “cloudready” installation but had to use 32 bit images

  24. Will there ever be support by any Chromium OS build, by any dev, for a local install without Google, but with features such as local storage and extensions and apps?

  25. Hi! I want to try Chromium OS on my XPS 15. The weekly build could work but the wifi (Broadcom) didn’t. So I tried the special build, but it stuck on the logo screen. I’m wondering what’s wrong. Do you have any idea?

    1. Ill be building a variant of the vanilla builds with Broadcom etc ‘soon’. This will allow the users with working Freon graphics (later model Intels) to use ChromiumOS.

  26. Hello Arnold,

First of all, thank you for your work!

I don’t know if I commented on the wrong post, but I can’t find my message, so I’m commenting again. 😉

I’m trying to install the 32-bits of this special build on my Acer netbook, but, when it boots, sometimes it freezes on the Chromium logo, sometime with the “booting the kernel” message. What can I do?

    Thanks for your help!

    Rafael Escobar

  27. Any requirements for using the update? I can’t update via the command line or from the settings. From the settings > About Chromium OS, it always show i’m up to date. From the command line, i always got the error:
Update failed, current operation is UPDATE_STATUS_IDLE, last error code is ErrorCode::kOmahaErrorInHTTPResponse(37)

I’m on amd64 build by the way.

Many thanks for your great works and many thanks in advance.

  28. Hi I am trying to install on a IBM t30 thinkpad. It boots from the usb. The Chromium screen comes up, then it go’s into”system is repairing itself” then it go’s back to the boot screen. rinse repeat. What am I doing wrong here?

    1. Hi Dave – I’m about 12 days late replying to you but essentially you aren’t doing anything wrong.

One of the hardware devices in that t30 is causing ChromiumOS to kernel panic. You can try going into your BIOS and turning off devices / features you know you don’t need. SD-card reader, Ethernet if you plan going WiFi or vice-versa, Bluetooth, etc…

It’s more than likely the processor and something that ChromiumOS needs but isn’t getting. I’ve seen this a lot on machines that don’t have the PAE instruction set (or whatever it’s called). The t30 has a Pentium 4 processor. I think that might be your limiting factor. Some Linux distros have a boot option to force PAE. Check this out: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE

I have to admit – boot options in ChromiumOS are not something I’ve ever tried to change.

Anyone want to give step-by-step how to change boot options?
