Alpha builds – R78-12476.0.2019_09_08

Alpha builds are now available for testing. These builds will pretty much always be near cutting edge release (in this case R78) and allow testing of new features before they are back ported into the released Special builds.
This will allow for a simpler mechanism to test and deploy new features without waiting for the cut of a specific release from Google to baseline in the main ChromiumOS repo.

Consider these builds even more alpha in quality therefore!

This particular build will not auto update but can be forced once the real R78 special version is deployed if desired.

When R78 special is ready, the upgrade process can be performed with the following command line after opening a shell prompt:

update_engine_client --update --omaha_url=http://chromebld.arnoldthebat.co.uk:9080/update

Build Details

  • Added kernel based Broadcom brcm80211 drivers and removed old Broadcom STA driver
  • Switched back to Intel IWL7K Wireless drivers
  • Added in all 4.14 kernel supported Marvell Wireless cards

Testing

Please test and log issues on https://github.com/arnoldthebat/chromiumos/issues. Ensure you tag the issue with the ‘Alpha’ tag as well as detailing the version of the build the issue was found in. When detailing the version, please use the tag with version of the build you are testing against. For example, for this build, use the tag: ‘R78-12476.0.2019_09_08’

  1. Is the VTPM kernel module also enabled on this?
Also I’m having some troubles with my Thunderbolt Dock on earlier 4.14.100, so wondering if there’s a new kernel.

    1. Answering my own question, it has 4.14.139 kernel. It works, however, I somehow could not get crostini terminal to open when I boot with this. It does open using command line or using 4.14.104 kernel. Not sure where the culprit.

On other note, @ARNOLDTHEBAT, would it be possible to compile a newer kernel base like 4.19 as I think there are better support for Thunderbolt docks on kernel 4.15 and later.

  2. hi all- i have had success with installing/running the 64 bit build on a one mix yoga 3 mini laptop. the problem i have is installing the linux tools, due to storage. why does this build allocate such a small amount of space for storage ? (around 1.2 gig) any suggestions on how I can increase this ?

    thanks to all in advance

  3. I am using a Chromebook Pixel 2015 (samus) with an old kernel 3.14. I am looking for an option to upgrade my kernel version so that I can use the Linux Beta Crostini with my outdated kernel but powerful enough hardware… i7 64bits + 16Gb Ram + 64 Gb SSD. Is that build the correct one for me to download and install? As it says AMD64 in the filename I suspect it will not work properly with my intel CPU…
    Thanks!

  4. I have a Tinkerboard R/Br with rockchip with RK3388 with 2gb ram. I’m interested in converting it to chromeOS. What version should I use?
