  1. Hello!

I’m currently working on the source of Chromium OS (syncing the repository). So, I’ve got two questions:
    1. On the screenshots I saw, it seems that you can’t log in usually with your Google account. Is that for real and if, how can I enable logging in with Google?
    2. My netbook has a Broadcom BCM4311 and a Synaptics touchpad. Is a current build working with those?

    Thanks

    1. Hi there.
      1. Yes you can log in with your Google account (well its always worked for me!)
      2. Try it and see. Broadcom drivers are a little lacking so don’t expect it to work!

  2. Hello, I’m attempting to install Chromium on a Liano desktop. I was wondering which build; if any, would give me the best chance. With the special build I was able to access the Kernal where I tried “enable_dev_usb_boot” however, I received the following message when I tried:
“Sorry, your firmware does not look like ChromeOS firmware.”

Any tips would be extremely helpful.

  3. Hello, I’m trying to get flash player on Chromium OS to work. I try to watch twitch.tv and it says i need flash player but youtube works fine. So I’m just confused. Any help will be appreciated. thankyou

  4. Hi, Im sorry to bother you, but im running out of options.

I have a HP MINI 110-3700 with wifi hardware startup and no ethernet cable slot.

Im trying to run chromeos latest version without success. I’ve tried pressing fn F2 till fn F12 to enable the wifi card without success either.

Is there anything I can do to start my intel wifi card?

    Thanks for your time.

  5. Hi bro ! Can you help me some problem with chromium os ? I want to build a chromium os for acer aspire V3-571G but I don’t know how to build a single version for my acer. Can you help me build a version for it, because I want to use chromium os for work and I feel good with it. I don’t like windows os or ubuntu. Many thanks bro !

  6. Google Play wants to use Flash. Adobe thinks this is a chromebook instead of Chromium OS and I should already have Flash. Is Flash included with your Chromium OS. If not how do i install it?

  7. Hi! Only a question. It’s posible to make bigger the system partition in the USB? Now it’s very small and I can’t save files, but my USB has 64GB and 57 are unused.
    Thanks and congratulations!! It’s Amazing!

  8. Hey Arnold,

I am running against some problem I hope you can you me with.
I downloaded your latest daily build to hopefully install on my ASUS EeePC 1011HA. Netbook is booting up nice from USB towards the first screen where you should choose for language, input and network. But then I am stuck. The network menu shows available networks the first 2 seconds, when I click my wifi network and put in the password to connect it suddenly cant find anymore networks and it is telling me the wifi is disabled. Do you have a solution for this?

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Echoesz

    1. Mhm now I am running into another problem..
Can not install Chromium OS to my harddrive.
If I login into chros and type: install /dev/sda
it starts doing a hw diagnostics test and after that comes up some smartctl error about “unknown usb bridge”.
When i try: install /dev/sda1, it scans the partition and tells me it is a partition on my usb drive.
And when i try: install /dev/sdb, it tells me there is no such device.
Seems like Chromium OS isnt recognizing my internal hard drive. Solution please?

      Many thanks in advance!

      1. Mhm apperently Chromium OS doesnt recognize the complete Intel Sata Controller. Is there a way to install it manually?

  9. Hey Arnold, it’s Jake with the VAIO again, I tried the latest special edition build, and had some minor success, in that I actually got debugging info!

Unfortunately there’s a ext4 filesystem error, so it’s still a no-go, I’d love to help troubleshoot this, so either email me or @JakeDotZip on twitter!

  10. Hi there.

I know you’re more than likely incredibly busy, but I would really appreciate some help.

I bought a chromebook thinking that I could use it as a lightweight arch machine. All was well, except I’m rather fickle.

I ran the Seabios flasher so I no longer get the error message on boot.

Basically, I want to use Chromium on my chromebook but I can’t get the roms to work.

Using an AcerC720p and win32diskimager as this has been sucessful with all other img files I’ve used.

When I use the img files from your download section it says “booting from drive” and sticks there. Left it on overnight and it remains in this state.

And when using the files from Hexxeh’s blog the screen goes black and does not change (again, left on over night).

Any suggestions on what I could do?

      1. I had similar issues with certain types of USB stick. The newer ones which pretend to be proper hard discs seem particularly poor. A good old fashioned removable storage pen drive works grand. Hope that helps someone…

    1. What chromebook machine did you purchase? Its likely the generic and special builds wont work well with it since the builds are designed to work with specific hardware

  11. Hello, thanks for the Chromium images and taking over from where Hexxeh left us. Are you working on a GAFE (google apps for education) admin console alternative? i would love to be able to manage all my Chromium devices/installations. 🙂

  12. Do you know if this will work on Dell Inspiron 530s?
    SPECS:Model: Dell 530S Slim Tower

  13. Hi,
I have hp compaq mini 110c with Broadcom wireless network adapter and Atheros AR8132 Fast Ethernet Controller in it.

I tried to run your Broadcom special edition with it, but Im facing a big problem. I canno’t connect to internet at all. Not even with ethernet(obviously WIFI doesn’t work). Chromium runs well and console works but theres just no network connection at all even when I have ethernet cable connected.

What I’m supposed to do? I have found some similar cases with this same model and didn’t find solution anywhere…

    Thanks in advance!

    1. SOLUTION WAS HERE!

Thanks Arnold! Although I encountered the problem in “wget”.
So I downloaded the “wl.ko” on another computer and placed it on a empty USB. To do so, I skipped line/stage 11 and did the following:

      1. fdisk -l To find out if the device was connected to my computer.
      2. sudo mkdir /media/usb Making a directory.
      3. sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usb
      4. cp /media/usb/wl.ko /lib/modules/3.4.0/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ Copy the “wl.ko” to the right directory.
      5. If all sucessful, proceed to line 12.

Hope it helped those who is having issues.
And also, thanks Arnold for the great Broadcom release!

Is there a way to get Netflix work in chromium?

  14. Hi Arnold,

Not sure who else to ask. I just installed Chromium OS Vanilla onto a Dell Inspiron mini 1012. Works perfectly except for waking up from sleep. If I close the lid and open it again, I have to restart; the screen stays black.

Do you know how to solve this? Is there a better build that you’ve done that I should install instead? I’m using the netbook with my grade 4 students, and want the simplest OS that most resembles Chrome OS (since we have Chromebooks at school).

    Thanks so much,
    Tom

    1. Hi Tom. I suggest staying away from the very new dailies. They tend to have some bugs. I highly suggest December builds. Speaking purely on personal experience, I’ve had nothing but troubles with the builds after December 14th.

I don’t think it has anything to do with what ArnoldTheBat is doing. I think the kernel code is changing or Google is making some changes to the source. It’s very “Beta” in the January and February builds.

Try the December builds – you’ll find them under the Weekly releases.

  15. Just installed your x86 Feb. 5 build onto a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012. Suspend+resume doesn’t work after the lid is closed; the screen stays black. Is there a solution for this?

  16. Hi, thanks for all the work you have done on chromium.
    Its great!

I am especially pleased at the ease of connecting to my school’s wpa2 enterprise network, easier than any linux i have used.
Can i please ask where chromium keeps network settings .. ?
/etc/wpa_supplicant seems empty .. i was hoping to leverage CrOS ability to connect to build a puppy linux disk for programming

  17. Hi,
Chrome OS crashed on my sons Samsung chromebook.
I am using the recovery utility to try and create a recovery USB.
The recovery utility downloads the file, unpacks it but gets stuck when trying to write the image to USB. I have tried 3 different USB drives all 8Gb in size but have the same issue, it gets stuck on 0% of writing image.
Is there anywhere I can get the image file without having to go through the recovery utility?
I have contacted Samsung support but they were not helpful.
Can the image file you are providing here be used for recovery of the chromebook?

    Many thanks,
    Dave Kenny

    1. You really need to contact Samsung for this and get a proper fix from them. Chromiuom OS is very similar to Chrome OS but not the same (and not supported by Google or Samsung)

  18. So honestly, I’d like to ditch Windows altogether and convert my Asus notebook into a Chromebook. I’ve installed and ran a few of these builds on a memory stick and they are great but sometimes have glitches. Is there a particular build that you would say is the most up to date and most stable of Chrome OS that I could use for every day? And another question for you: Is Chromium OS basically the same as Chrome OS that you’d find on a Chromebox?

  19. Hi,

Just downloaded Chromium OS build. Having a problem with webpages not loading. I am connected to the Internet (I can ping google.co.uk and I get search suggestions) but when I attempt to navigate to any website, it just sits on a white screen, a black screen or a ‘He’s dead Jim’ error message. Strangely, browsing webpages sometimes works, and sometimes the above happens. Could anyone suggest a solution?

    Many Thanks.

      1. Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have not tried the special builds. I will do so. I am using a pretty ancient Toshiba Equium, with 1GB of RAM and an Intel Centrino Duo. I know these are pretty low specs, but I thought that Chromium OS was pretty light on the hardware, being based on Gentoo, (or am I mistaken?) so this shouldn’t be a problem.

        Many Thanks.

  20. Arnold,

Thanks so much for all the work you’ve done to bring this stuff together in a fairly cohesive package. Everything seems to work quite well on the units I’ve tried, but I’m a bit stumped on how to make “automatic upgrades” work. I’ve incorporated MrPlow’s Flash update script into my boot process, but I notice it disappears if I update the OS. Is there somewhere I can research to figure out how to make this persistent? I’m still figuring out the OS, but I have played with Linux quite a bit in the past. Upstart is pretty new to me, so getting that to fire off at the right time has been a bit of a pain as well — any pointers would be awesome!

  21. A quick word of thanks (and doffing of hat) for your Chromium efforts! I’ve been messing around with for a day or two now, awesome work. I shall refer my more nerdy chums since my wife fails to understand my excitement…

  22. Hello, I have a Dell latitude e6320 with a bcm4313 wireless card. I can’t use 32bit release, it crash on startup before tty input. How I can found 64 bit driver for my wireless card ? I need wl.ko ?

  23. Hello,

I have the last buid (march-02) and the Google File manager apps not able to show any Google Drive files !

And we get “error retreving drive space information”…

    Tks,

    Snoopyski

  24. Hi,

Just noticed that french keyboard seems broken in last builds. I tried the last february weekly build that was working fine but in march I noticed that numbers and other punctuation characters are not well displayed.

Could you explain how to disable automatic update?

    Regards,

    1. You would be possibly better going for the special builds which will remain a little more static. The daily builds and dev server updates are always cutting edge so not a lot I can do to prevent updates once you have selected to update. You can try pointing the omaha client at a duff URL which might stop updates?

  25. Hi ATB. Let me start off by saying a big thanks for all your work here. Im new to chromeos and your input has been damn awesome! Now I need a little further help.
Ive downloaded an .img from your site, Cx86OS-20150402010101.img and have managed to get it to usb fine on a HP Mini 110. I can login using my google credentials and install apps etc. I am now hoping to install it to the HDD of the HP Mini. I use the Alt+CTRL+T and type “install” hit enter. It immediately prompts me for a password. Ive tried “password” but to no avail. It comes back with:
    initctl: Unknown instance:
Error: can not determine destination device. Specify –dst yourself.

Are you able to assist me here. Sorry, Im a complete noob. Ill try not bother you too much.

    Much appreciated,

    Duane

    1. Try /usr/sbin/chromeos-install –dst=/dev/sdX where X is your hard drive. Typically /usr/sbin/chromeos-install –dst=/dev/sda

This will overwrite everything so you have been warned!

  26. Hi,I’m a Chinese student so maybe my English isn’t so good……

I met some problem druing loading Chromium OS with USB stick. After the icon of Chromium OS disappeared, the login window cann’t be dieplayed correctly. It’s white in the middle, with several black block around. Is it because of the Graphics card?My laptop is ASUS A550V,with Intel HD graphics 4000.I tried the special version, but I can’t see the logo at all this time. Please tell me what to do.I’ve been working on it for hours.

Besides,I have to say thank you.For I can’t visit the famous hexxeh’s website, and almost every I can find in Baidu is several year’s old,so the available image of Chromium OS is really difficult to find.I almost thought Goodle has already given up the project until I saw your website! It’s really a surprise.

    Much appreciated,

    Zou

      1. i did.. but unfortunately none of them worked for me. or i coudnt make it work perhaps. not i can play some of the youtube videos and i have sound as well but pure flash doesnt work.. could you write me a link which you think work best please?

  27. Can I use the powerwash option Master Arnorldthebat ? 😀 Plss help mee. I install your build on my old laptop.. its frigging fast broooo, Hahaha

  28. i did.. but unfortunately none of them worked for me. or i coudnt make it work perhaps. not i can play some of the youtube videos and i have sound as well but pure flash doesnt work.. could you write me a link which you think work best please?

  29. I downloaded a zip file actually chromium_os_notes.zip and my files app started to crush. I keep getting this “some operations are taking longer then expected. Do you want to abort them” and keep pressing abort button but nothing is happening. I tried to delete the file but since i can’t open my files, i can’t delete it either. I also tried to powerwash my chrome os but for some reason it doesn’t powerwash. it says you need to restart your pc. i press restart button but then it starts as usual and if i try to powerwash again just the some one more time..

    any suggestions?

    thanks and take care..

  30. Hey Arnold, how do I get my wifi working with the RTL8191SE wifi adapter? I have a Toshiba T130-11H and I would like to get working.
    Thanks.

  31. Hi Arnold, I’ve been trying to get your builds working on an Advent 4211, which is just a rebadged MSI Wind U100. It’s awesome, and has given much needed life to an old netbook, but wifi doesn’t work. Do you know if drivers are included? Cheers!

  32. Hello Mr Bat,
I have downloaded and loaded your image on to an SD card to use in an old laptop that no longer likes to play nice with a HDD, is there anyway I can expand the .img file so I can use the full size of the SD card?

    Regards
    Giles

  33. Hi, Any chance you can add support for the Surface Pro 3’s Marvell Wi-Fi?

The latest daily build boots to the nice install screen but says Wi-FI is off and won’t let me continue.

The latest special build boots to a black screen saying it failed to load pcie8897_u. I have found the required files here:

    https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/third_party/marvell/+/aa22c073d4688ba08c0bd31d9803217db25687bc

You can also download them easily from here:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByvG-UAyk_Vzc21KdmZlandlOWs/view?usp=sharing

Or if you could just tell me which folder to put them in.

    Thanks

  34. hi guys –

    i have a HP Elitebook 8470p.

This installed properly.. (the usb booted correctly, and i completed the install).
    >> But after removing the USB, the bios says ‘boot partition not found’

I cleaned the hard drive and managed to install ubuntu again.. but why is it after installing ChromiumOS, the boot partition isn’t found?

    thanks for your help!

  35. Hey. I have a doubt regarding your builds. Do they support the nVidia optimus technology? I mean like switching between the dedicated GPU and the integrated one? Right now I’m using hexxeh’s vanilla build, and it’s really buggy. I want to use your builds, but I want to know if there is a way to either switch, or completely turn off the nVidia GPU because it eats up too much battery.
Also, currently my touchpad’s clicking ain’t working. I’m having to use an external USB mouse. Will your build have the drivers for Elantech touchpad?
    I’m sorry I’m kind of a newbie.
    Thanks and Regards.

      1. Arnold, I will try the special build today and tell you if it works.
MrPlow, unfortunately, there is no such option in the BIOS.

        1. I tried the special build Arnold. It doesn’t boot, and gets stuck on-
          No caching mode page found
          Assuming drive cache: write through.

  36. Hey there! I posted this on another post but I don’t know if it’s a visible there as here. I’ve tried the latest Chromium OS special build on two different laptops with similar specs. Whenever I boot from USB, I get a black screen that says “decompressing linux”. Once that’s done, a new line shows up that says “booting kernel”. Then about a dozen other lines show up that I can’t understand. I’ve tried the Alt+Ctrl+F2 > login > crosh > install. But I get an error. I’d appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks!

  37. I tried the special build Arnold. It doesn’t boot, and gets stuck on-
    No caching mode page found
    Assuming drive cache: write through.
I searched for fixes online, but couldn’t find a way to get your build to boot.

  38. Hey there, just wanted to thank you for awesomely providing us with these builds. I wanted to ask you if there is any chance of releasing builds as vmware images, even if you were to do it every now and then 🙂

  39. Hello Arnold, I was just wondering are you in need of Forum (Blog) Moderators or Beta Testers (I have every computer imaginable to test Chromium Special Builds on for support) If you get this then you can reply to [email protected]

    Thanks, ‘
    -AwlsomeAlex

    1. Hey Mate, U mind deleting this? My brother posted my email when I told him not to. (BTW, the reason why I had him type it was because I had a major headache.)

      Thanks.

(P.S. I’m really excited for the next special builds, so keep up the good work mate.)

    2. Im not really looking at specific beta testers for the distributions as yet since everyone is really a beta tester!, but thanks for the kind offer! Please keep on testing and feeding back.

  40. Hi Alex, I have tried many of your builds on a Mac and they don’t seem to work. Would you be able to give instructions on how to create a custom build with our own drivers? I know mac have linux drivers since they work well with Ubuntu most of the time.

    1. If you’re looking for a response from me, then it should work fine on a Mac (If it has Intel and is configured as GPT Table, since that is what Chromium reads.) PowerPC doesn’t work. I have tried to talk to Arnold about this but I don’t know if he will ever implement it. Also, try a 32bit version and burn the .img to a CD, not a Flash Drive. Hope that helps.

      1. Thanks, I am working on a old 2009 Macbook Air and I seem to have a lot of issues trying to boot off of USB, and unfortunately no CD Drive… I tried both the 64bit and 32bit versions with no luck. Something seems to be stuck with drivers. I even try imaging directly onto the internal hard drive but no luck there either. Next thing I will try is building from source, I just don’t know enough about linux drivers.

        1. Hmmm…… Well maybe you can first change the partition table to GPT since that is what Chromium reads, then you can figure out the Wi-First drive, after that just figure out your display. When u figure that out, just reply to this.

  41. I need help please!!
I’ traying to install chrome os 32 bits on mi laptop and it don’t recognice the wired connection and the wifi is break so it dosn’t work, how can I turn on the wired connection? Please I need help
